Echt Peeters gaat daar verandering in brengen. |
haags gemeentemuseum edition |
'The world is going to change radically.’ Henk Peeters (b. The Hague, 1925) said so more than once. The statement was an expression of his deep desire for a Communist society. It was not to be, but Peeters remained an idealist. Together with Armando and Jan Schoonhoven, he founded the Nul group – the Dutch arm of the international ZERO movement (including artists like Piero Manzoni en Lucio Fontana), with which he maintained close contacts. Their art was all about eliminating the artist’s personal style and elevating everyday life to art through the use of ordinary materials. Peeters used cotton wool, feather and hair in his artworks and even ‘drew’ and ‘painted’ with smoke and fire.
2011 the Haags Gemeentemuseum welcomed the first ever one-man show of Henk Peeters’ work since the 1960s. A major installation involving bags of water was recreated especially for the occasion. It was originally on show at the historical international ZERO-0-NUL exhibition held at the Gemeente museum in 1964. To mark the occasion of the 2011 exhibition, the catalogue of the Haags Gemeentemuseum’s 1964 exhibition Zero (Mack/Piene/Uecker) – Nul (Schoonhoven/Armando/Henk Peeters) was republished as multiple. henk peeters on art, life and piero manzoniWagemans text concerns the later works of Peeters in relation to his artistic dialogue with Piero Manzoni in the early ‘60s. Peeters started his series of Cowhides in 1996, after 30 years of non-production of new works. By signing the animalskin on the back he declares it to be a work of art. Peeters, himself a signed work of art by Manzoni in 1961, reverses his working method from the 60’s. By now emphasizing his signature he opposes his neutral, non-personal earlier procedure. The book also contains, for the first time in english translation, the famous openingtext Henk Peeters delivered in the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 1969, on the occasion of Manzoni’s first museum retrospective.
